The purpose of this thesis was to collect patients experiences from the caretaking they have received at Rauma’s Department of Outpatient Surgery. We also looked at the same topic through nurses perspective. Our objective was to develop the given guidance and caretaking within this department based on the results of this research. A quantitive research method was used. Our target groups were the nurses (N=4) and the patients (N=60) of the Department of Outpatient Surgery who had had treatment in between November and December 2019. In total 4 nurses and 38 patients took the survey. Patients response percentage came to 63% and nurses to 100%. The age range between the responders were 17-83 years. The research results showed that all the patients received individual guidance, written and vocal. All the patients also received instructions on after operation treatment. Everyone received all the information they required within enough time. All the patients that took the survey considered that the delivery of the instructions and guidance was interpersonal and it didn’t feel as it was rushed. In addition, all the participants thought that the nurse who delivered these at the time was professional. The nurses' survey showed that individual guidance, written and vocal, and also instructions over on the phone were delivered to the patients. All the nurses thought there was enough time to fully deliver them. Some knowledge from previous research was used as a support. The delivery of the guidance was based on the interaction between one another. Furthermore, the fulfilment of the delivery was looked at with the patient at the time. Both surveys that took place, patients and nurses, included an open space for additional comments. The open space was an opportunity for the participants to tell what was good about the whole and what could be improved. The nurses that took the survey didn’t have any additional comments but more than a few patients did. The common factor between all the comments was the satisfaction in the general atmosphere and the guidance provided. A part of the comments required more clarification on the guidance and details, for example, a phone number that they could call if they faced a problem. The Department of Outpatient Surgery will discontinue in spring 2020. Therefore, the research results can’t be further used in the department. The nurses had told that the discontinuous of the department affects their work motivation but despite that, they participated actively in survey taking.

The subject of this thesis was surgical checklists. The purpose was to make elective surgical patient checklists of pre- and postoperative nursing and discharge to Satasairaala’s children department’s nurses and nursing students. The aim of this thesis was to standardize action when taking care of elective surgical patient, advance patient safety and advance quality of nursing. Satasairaala’s children’s department didn’t have surgical patient checklist, so there were need for those. The thesis was conducted in collaboration with Satasairaala’s nurses as a project. Checklists and their content are based on evidence. Content is based on interview in Satasairaala, observation at children’s department, knowledge of the nurses, scientific articles, Current care guidelines, nursing guidelines, WHO´s surgical safety checklist, Terveysportti’s databases for nurses and scientific research in literature search. The result of this thesis was three checklists, which are related to elective surgical patient’s nursing actions and processes. Checklists includes parts of patient transfer and ending the treatment because according to the literature they are the most critical points in patient’s treatment. One checklist is for preoperative nursing, second is for postoperative nursing and third is for discharge. Checklists were put in use as soon as they were ready. After that nurses in children’s department had an opportunity to effect content of the checklists with questionnaire. There were done some changes to checklists based on feedback. Overall nurses thought checklists were good tools for nursing.
