The purpose of this thesis was to analyze and prevent transport damages in Valmet Automotive's inbound logistics. The aim was to suggest actions to reduce and prevent transport damages. In order to achieve this goal, research questions were set to clarify 1) the stages of the transport chain, 2) the most frequent transport damages, and 3) the transport damages with the most significant cost implications. The research was conducted using action research approach during the spring 2019. The topics discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis included the issues of inbound logistics, production and inventory management strategies, order penetration point, transport chain, logistics outsourcing, milkrun, packaging, delivery reclamations, and transport legislation. The theoretical part also included the description of Valmet Automotive's inbound logistics chain from forecast to receiving goods and the stages of the transport chain from loading to unloading. The empirical part presented the research process and the results observed. The most frequent transport damages were specified to different transport companies and the frequency was reported on monthly and annual basis. The transport damages that had the most significant cost effect were found by adding the total costs of transport damages caused by all parties in transport chain. The most frequent transport damages in the Valmet Automotive’s transport chain were the delays in the deliveries caused by transport companies, the dampness damages due to the leakage of the trailers, damages of the goods during transport, loss of the goods at the terminal or other stages of the transport chain, and errors in the unloading situation. The most significant costs were caused by poor communication between the parties, the delays of the transport companies and thefts in the transport chain. As a result of the study, actions to reduce and prevent transport damages were suggested. Suggestions for actions were discussed and evaluated in a meeting that was attended by the Valmet Automotive’s Claim Manager, Legal Advisor and Logistics Engineer. Based on the discussions at the meeting, the most promising suggestions for actions were chosen, such as auditing of transport company, the scorecard method, developing protection for parts affected by dampness damage, creating a feedback system, and providing operating instructions for disposable packaging.
