Two versions of RefWorks available – choose which one to log in

RefWorks is a web-based tool that allows you to create and manage your own personal database of useful references. You can then use these to quickly compile a bibliography for your reports and papers. It also allows you to collaborate and share your research with colleagues.

What does it do?

  • You can import references directly from web and a number of online databases.
  • It allows you to organise, store and manage your references.
  • It allows you to automatically format your bibliography in a variety of styles.
  • It allows you to share your references with colleagues.

The new RefWorks

A new interface and upgraded version of RefWorks is now available. Have a look at the new RefWorks YouTube channel. If you are new to RefWorks we recommend logging in via the new version with a simplified and more intuitive interface.

For a new user

An institutional account is available to students and staff at SAMK and includes unlimited document storage, unlimited sharing inside and outside the institution and institution-wide sharing.

Importing existing references from the old RefWorks

If you have an account in the old RefWorks you can import your existing references into the new RefWorks. Read how to do this.

Save articles from the web or a database

RefWorks has a tool that installs in any web browser called the Save to RefWorks button. The button grabs information from any web page – in some cases a complete article – and adds it to your RefWorks library. Read how to install the Save to RefWorks button.

Export references to RefWorks directly from a database. How to do it in Finna:

  • Find the publication or article. Click Export and select Export to RefWorks.
  • Select Export to the new RefWorks.
  • Log in to RefWorks.
  • The reference will be saved under the Last imported directory.
  • Edit the reference if needed.

To add an item manually to RefWorks, click the plus icon (Add a reference) at the top of the page. If you plan on adding the item to an existing collection, click on the collection first, then click the plus icon. Read more.

Using Write-N-Cite to write and format your paper

Write-N-Cite is a utility that allows users to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in Microsoft Word. You can access your references by folder, by quick search or by all references with the ability to sort by author, title or year. With Write-N-Cite, you can cite references in a manuscript with just a click and watch your paper format instantly including in-text citations, footnotes and your bibliography. The utility installs a RefWorks tab in the MS Word ribbon or you can access it from the References tab in Microsoft Word. Write-N-Cite will not work with Office 365 users using cloud-based app. Word must be installed locally. Read the detailed instructions.

The old RefWorks

The old Refworks will be available until 2019. If you are an existing user then you can carry on using the old version for the time being. You can transfer your references over to the new version at anytime. Read how to do this.
